How workers contribute to monitoring
What a new worker's measurements are worth, and how that changes.
Enrolling a worker does not immediately move any provider's verdict, and that is deliberate. A worker's influence is earned by having a record, because a system where influence arrives with enrolment is a system anybody can enrol their way into.
The first days
A new worker measures the same targets as everybody else and uploads the same signed results. Those results are recorded in full. What they carry initially is little weight in the consensus, while the platform accumulates a picture of how this worker behaves against a consensus it did not influence.
Nothing is hidden during this period. Your worker appears in the fleet register, its heartbeats and uploads are visible to you, and its measurements are part of the record.
What builds a record
- Consistency. Agreeing with well-established consensus, when the consensus is well established. Disagreeing during a genuine regional outage is not a mark against a worker; it is the worker doing its job.
- Continuity. Heartbeating without long unexplained silences. A worker that disappears for a week is not evidence about the week it was gone.
- Independence. Being somewhere and on something that other workers are not. A worker in an under-covered region contributes more information per measurement than one in a crowded one, simply because it is the only view of that path.
What reduces a worker's contribution
- Falling below the supported version floor, because measurement semantics change between versions and mixing them silently corrupts a verdict.
- Long silence, because measurements nobody can date are not evidence about now.
- Persistent disagreement with the rest of the network in situations where nobody else sees a problem, which usually means the worker's own connectivity, not the provider's.
- Suspension by staff, which stops contribution entirely while keeping the history.
Where to be most useful
Coverage, not quantity. A second worker in a well-covered European city adds a little; a first worker in an under-covered region adds a lot, because it turns a blank in the regional breakdown into a measurement.
Independence of network matters as much as geography. Two workers in the same city on two genuinely different upstreams are two vantage points; two on the same upstream are close to one.
What you get out of it
Your worker's own activity, its measurement history, and the fleet's state are visible to you in the dashboard. You are contributing to a public, independent measurement of provider reliability that does not depend on providers reporting on themselves.
