When monitoring results look wrong

Updated

For provider managers: a verdict that disagrees with what you see internally.

This page is for a provider manager looking at a monitoring result they believe is wrong. The first thing worth saying is that a disagreement between your internal monitoring and this one is often not an error in either.

Your monitoring and ours measure different things

Internal monitoring measures your systems from inside your network. This measures whether your address space answers the rest of the internet, from many places at once.

A routing problem at an upstream, a peering dispute, or a regional transit failure is invisible from inside your network and completely visible from outside it. That gap is precisely what independent monitoring is for, and a disagreement of this shape usually means it is working.

Check the regional breakdown first

Your status page shows the verdict per region. A global "degraded" driven by one country is a very different problem from a genuine global one, and the breakdown says which you have within seconds.

A regional problem you cannot reproduce is the classic case: reachable from your office and your monitoring, unreachable from one continent.

Check which network

The figures name the autonomous system they describe. If your listing has several ASNs registered, look at the per-network view: one healthy network and one struggling one averages into a middling overall figure that describes neither.

If a registered ASN is no longer yours, or is no longer announced, that is a register problem rather than a monitoring one, and you can fix it from the provider editor.

Check the coverage

Every headline figure states how many countries, networks and independent workers it came from. A verdict from two workers is a much weaker claim than one from twenty, and the page says which you have.

What is not happening

  • Nobody is measuring a specific customer's VM. Targets are sampled from your announced space.
  • A single worker cannot move your verdict. See How consensus is calculated.
  • A monitoring problem on our side produces "no recent data", never an outage against you.

If it is still wrong

Contact support with the provider, the window, and what you were seeing instead. A verdict can be traced back to the measurements behind it: which workers, from where, at what time.
